Set the date: May 1, 2022 at the MN Landscape Arboretum!

Bud Break 5k Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run registration is open! Make fun plans for May 1 by registering for the Arb’s annual Bud Break 5k or the many other options available. Register the kids and grandkids for a 1k fun run, and they’ll get a t-shirt, too.

In-person or virtual participation.

Bud Break 2021 has a new location and race options. To keep everyone safe this year we are offering an all-day event with timed starts so you can choose what works best for you. The race starts at the Farm at the Arb (3210 W 82nd St, Chanhassen, MN 55317.)

Want to really race? The timed race is for you. Raceberry Jam will be timing runners between 8:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. We have six heats of 25 runners. The course starts and ends at Farm at the Arb. The course runs along the Eastern Drive to Three-Mile Drive, cuts through the grounds on Three-Mile Walk, and then returns to the farm.
Don’t care about your time? Just want some exercise in nature? Then the non-timed race is for you. This course starts on a brand new paved path from Farm at the Arb and unitizes a portion of Three-Mile Walk before returning to the farm. This course will be limited to 25 people every half hour.
Want to run on your own, support the Arb and get a t-shirt? The virtual Bud Break is for you.
Kids get a new race location, too – we have a 1k route at Farm at the Arb for kids to compete.
The Bud Break is an important fundraiser for the Arboretum and all proceeds from the race are used for grounds and garden upkeep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I go when I get to the Arb?
All runners and walkers should use the 82nd Street entrance to the Farm at the Arb. Three-mile Drive will be closed to cars from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. for the timed races.

What COVID precautions are you taking?
We are spreading out the event and allowing only 25 timed runners to start every 15 minutes. The Starting line will have markings six feet apart to keep everyone distanced. Non-timed runners/walkers will also be limited to 25 at a time with check-in on the half-hour. These participants can start when the path is clear.

Face masks will be required at check-in and at the starting and finish line for the timed runs. Runners may remove mask while running. Face masks should be worn during the non-timed run if you are unable to maintain social distance on the route.

When can I pick up my t-shirt?
T-shirt pick up will be available all day, arrive at the Arb at the Farm at the time you signed up for and we will have your t-shirt at the check-in table (sign up by April 18 to be guaranteed a race shirt.)

Are members able to register other participants?
Yes, Arboretum members can register o:ther participants up to their membership level capacity. Example: a Duo Member can register themselves and one additional participant. A Duo +2 Member can register themselves and three additional participants.

How should I track my run?
For an outdoor run, you will need a tracking device to help you measure the 3.1 miles for the Bud Break or 1k for the kid’s fun run. Any smartwatch, GPS device or phone app that tracks mileage is acceptable.

How long is a 5k?
It’s 3.1 miles – the “k” stands for a kilometer. A kilometer is 0.62 of a mile, which makes a 5k race 3.1 miles long or 16368 feet long or 5000 meters long.

How long is a 1k for the kid’s race?
Just .62 miles or 2.5 laps on a standard track.

What is a virtual run?
A virtual race is a race that can be run (or walked) from any location you choose. You can run, jog, or walk on a road, trail, treadmill, or on a track. You get to run your own race, at your own pace, and time it yourself.
